For those who were confused about what this monstrosity was in my story yesterday 😂, it is my copycat version of #tsujihan (a seafood restaurant in Tokyo) seafood bowl. Basically various cubes of sashimi hand-mixed together with a bit of cucumber, cooked potato and diced jumbo scallions until sticky, dusted with lemon zest, topped with sea urchin and simply too much ikura over rice and toasted sesame seeds. Voilà. •

A couple days ago I noticed our downstair neighbor, a couple with a young child, were moving out. Yesterday Jason ran into them and asked where they were moving to, and the husband just said, “We’re moving to Phuket. Yeah we need a break. We’ll see what comes next.” Just like that! Girly “hummus”, made with boiled red lentil that is blushed with a bit of beet powder. The rest dutifully comes, more or less, like any other hummus… tahini, garlic, cumin. But in the end, it is allowed to rebel again with the addition of Greek yogurt and a dab of toasted sesame oil. Dressed simply with olive oil and chili powder. •

Hi, I’m Mandy Lee, Taiwan-born, Vancouver-raised, and slow-aged in New York for the better part of my life.
